Stopping Recurrent Mud Fever in Friesian Horses

Background

Friesian horses are well known for their susceptibility to mud fever, particularly during prolonged wet winters. In this paddock-based setup in France, recurring mud fever had been a consistent issue for multiple horses over several years.

The Horses

  • Marcus (4 legs fitted)

  • Cador (2 legs fitted)

  • Location: France

  • Environment: Paddock, persistently wet and muddy winter conditions

Historically, both horses developed mud fever every winter.

Intervention

Stride-On Equine leg bands were installed in September 2024, ahead of winter.
No other preventative treatments or management changes were introduced.

Outcome

From installation through to veterinary inspection on 13 January 2025:

  • No mud fever observed on either horse

  • No band loss after 4 months in wet, muddy conditions

  • Bands remained removable and active, with visible remaining efficacy

The horses remained active and playful throughout the period.

Key Observations

  • Preventative use only (no concurrent treatments)

  • Long-term exposure to demanding winter conditions

  • Practical durability: bands stayed in place and functional

  • Clear contrast with previous winters

Owner Testimonial

“I applied Stride-On to horses with a long history of recurring mud fever. This winter, not a single flare-up. Couldn't be happier for them.”
