Managing Chronic Mud Fever in a Performance Horse

Background

Tonya Cummins’ horse, Gabby, a draft cross warmblood mare, had a long history of chronic mud fever, including severe flare-ups that resulted in lameness. During previous winters, the condition repeatedly limited work and competition. Topical creams provided only partial and short-lived relief.

Intervention

Stride-On® Equine leg bands were introduced as part of mud fever management. No other changes to routine care.

Reported Outcome

Since fitting the bands:

  • Mud fever has remained under control, with no major flare-ups reported

  • The mare returned to soundness and resumed showing

  • Bands were described as easy to use and secure during wear

  • Bands were temporarily removed only for compliance with rated show rules

“The bands are awesome. They're definitely keeping the mud fever away. When I first reached out, this mare was dead lame from mud fever—and now she's back to showing so it is fantastic.”
