Identifying Teat-End Damage Behind a Sudden SCC Surge at Calving

This experienced 600-cow farm, operating a wintering barn system, had never faced udder health problems during calving. Season after season, bulk tank SCC remained low, with mastitis well under control. That consistency made the sudden rise to 250,000 SCC all the more alarming—especially considering that 50 mastitis cows were excluded from the tank, resulting in immediate production and revenue loss.

The scale of the issue was out of character for the herd, and nothing on the surface explained why calving had turned into a mastitis challenge for the first time.

To break the pattern, the team turned to Snapshot®.

The Snapshot® report revealed something that routine checks had missed:
distinct markers indicating teat-end damage.

This type of signature typically appears when milking equipment is exerting incorrect vacuum or detachment forces—something that often goes unnoticed initially but can drive rapid increases in mastitis risk.

A focused investigation followed, leading to the key finding:

  • The recently installed ACRs had not been correctly calibrated, causing excess stress on teat ends.

No amount of treatment would have addressed the problem without uncovering this underlying cause.

Once identified, the solution was straightforward:

  • Recalibrate the new ACRs to correct detachment performance and remove teat-end stress.

Following recalibration:

  • SCC returned to low, stable levels, and

  • New mastitis cases subsided.

The turnaround confirmed that the outbreak was not pathogen-led but mechanically driven—precisely the type of issue Snapshot® excels at detecting.

Snapshot® allowed this farm to pinpoint a mechanical cause that would not have been detected through conventional testing or visual inspection alone. Instead of escalating intervention or unnecessary treatment, the team implemented a simple technical correction that immediately stabilised udder health and production.
